India’s 1-0 series victory in their recent two-Test outing in Sri Lanka has left their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification hopes facing difficult odds. Needing a 2-0 clean sweep to maximize key points, Shubman Gill’s side was held to a draw in the second Test at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground by Dhananjaya de Silva’s team. As a result, India remains fifth in the WTC rankings, trailing fourth-placed Bangladesh, who earned a 1-1 draw in Australia.
The Indian team entered the tour amidst a transition period following the exits of R. Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, alongside the absence of injured pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. To prepare, the visitors won a warm-up fixture, while several squad members featured for India A against Sri Lanka A.
India opened the series emphatically at Galle, winning the first Test by 165 runs. Devdutt Padikkal posted scores of 167 and 44 at the number three spot—a position previously occupied by Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, and Cheteshwar Pujara—while left-arm spinner Manav Suthar also delivered a strong performance.
Sri Lanka’s resilience centered on Sonal Dinusha, who followed a first-Test century with twin hundreds in Colombo. Dinusha's performance helped the hosts erase a follow-on deficit and survive a tense final day. Following a home series loss to South Africa last year, India now faces a must-win scenario in upcoming away Tests against New Zealand and home fixtures against Australia, while relying on favourable mathematical permutations to reach the WTC final.
