Premier League clubs have set a new summer spending record for the second consecutive season, reaching a combined outlay of around £3.46 billion ($4.67 billion). The total surpasses last summer's breach of the £3 billion mark, highlighting exponential growth compared to the £1.13 billion spent five years ago.
The spending continued up to the 11 p.m. deadline on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Manchester City headlined deadline day by completing a reported British record-equalling £125 million transfer for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. City also completed a £65 million deal for Everton's Senegal winger Iliman Ndiaye, bringing their total window expenditure to a league-leading £458 million under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Fernandez was one of four players to cross the £100 million threshold during the window. Manchester City acquired midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, and Liverpool secured France forward Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial £107 million in a deal that could rise to £123 million. Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur broke their club transfer record by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal potentially worth £100 million.
Clubs increasingly turned to domestic competitors, with approximately 38% of all deals taking place between Premier League teams—up from 30% last summer. Beyond City, Chelsea spent £349 million to back new manager Xabi Alonso, while Tottenham invested £303 million to rebuild after two straight seasons near the relegation zone. Promoted sides Ipswich, Coventry City, and Hull City spent over £400 million combined according to Transfermarkt.
Other key moves included Aston Villa's £47 million purchase of Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG and Newcastle's £51.4 million signing of forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille. Sunderland secured 21-year-old Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Olympique Lyonnais for £30 million after beating Crystal Palace. However, deadline day also saw failed moves, including Folarin Balogun's collapsed transfer to Everton and Lamine Camara's reported £47.1 million move to Chelsea falling through.
