A dates overlap between the Irani Cup and the India-A series against Australia-A leaves national selectors with a difficult squad balancing act.

A scheduling conflict by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could force Rest of India to field a depleted squad in their upcoming Irani Cup clash against Ranji Trophy champion Jammu and Kashmir.

The Irani Cup is scheduled to be played in Srinagar from October 1 to 5. However, those dates overlap with the second multi-day fixture between India-A and Australia-A, scheduled for September 29 to October 2 in Puducherry. The clash leaves the national selection committee to decide whether to prioritize the premier domestic contest, split prominent players across the two fixtures, or field a full-strength side against Australia-A.

An insider at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, which works with the Board's cricket operations wing on A-tour itineraries, indicated the issue could have been prevented if the three one-day matches had been scheduled between the two four-day games. The full series itinerary in Puducherry features multi-day games from September 22 to 25 and September 29 to October 2, followed by one-dayers on October 6, 9, and 11.

Viewing the positive side of the fixture overlap, 1983 World Cup winner and Mumbai Ranji team mentor Sandeep Patil noted that double the number of players will now get an opportunity to deliver a strong performance. Patil added that tight schedules are not unique to India, as all major cricket nations are dealing with similar dilemmas.
