After losing his BCCI central contract and taking a break from international cricket, Ishan Kishan earned his way back into the national team and helped India defend its T20 World Cup title.
Ishan Kishan's international career stood at a critical juncture after he took a leave of absence midway through India's 2023-24 tour of South Africa citing the need for a mental reset. After declining to play domestic cricket for Jharkhand while preparing for IPL 2024, Kishan fell out of favor with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and was stripped of his central contract alongside current T20I captain Shreyas Iyer.
Choosing self-reflection over self-pity, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter turned his fortunes around with outstanding performances in domestic cricket across formats. Demonstrating both tactical leadership and form, Kishan led his team to a maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, starring in the final with a brazen century.
Kishan's domestic resurgence caught the attention of T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav ahead of India's home T20 World Cup campaign, where the team was looking to defend the title won in Bridgetown under Rohit Sharma in June 2024. In a brief chat, Suryakumar asked, "Chhotu, World Cup jitayega?" to which Kishan replied, "Bharosa karogey?" Suryakumar agreed with a brief "Chal, kiya," bringing the Jharkhandi back into the national fold.
Kishan celebrated his reintegration with scores of 76, 28, and 103 at No. 3 against New Zealand in India's final series before the World Cup. At the tournament, he initially opened the batting and kept wickets, producing scores of 20, 61, 77, 18, and 0 in his first five games while opening with Abhishek Sharma.
To break up the all-left-handed opening pair after opposition off-spinners targeted them, India brought Sanju Samson back to open from the Super Eight fixture against Zimbabwe. Shifted down to No. 3, Kishan maintained his impact with scores of 38 off 24 balls, 10 off 6 balls, 39 off 18 balls, and a whirlwind 25-ball 54 in the final against New Zealand to help India retain the trophy. His T20I success has since brought him back into India's ODI mix.
