Tilak Varma strengthened his push for an Indian Test call-up after a resolute five-hour knock for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final against East Zone.
Tilak Varma fell just one run short of his ninth First-Class century when he was caught and bowled by off-spinner Kounain Quraishi for 99 in the Duleep Trophy final at Chepauk. The dismissal marked the 23-year-old Hyderabadi batter's first dismissal in nearly two months and six competitive innings. South Zone eventually conceded the title to East Zone on a first-innings lead.
Tasked with responding to East Zone's massive total of 708—powered by Ishan Kishan's highest First-Class score of 270—Tilak showed defensive authority and immense maturity, negotiating 210 deliveries across more than five hours. His controlled display earned him the Player-of-the-Tournament award, adding to earlier Duleep Trophy scores of 116 and 51, alongside unbeaten outings in T20Is in Harare and a 53 against England in Southampton on July 11.
Unabashed in his desire to play red-ball cricket for India, Tilak publicly expressed his wish to play the Duleep final before travelling to Delhi for the T20I series against Afghanistan. The final marked his 25th First-Class appearance since debuting for Hyderabad against Andhra as a 16-year-old in December 2018.
Although Tilak made his international debut in a T20I against the West Indies in August 2023 and has played six ODIs, he has primarily established himself in the shortest format with 59 appearances, averaging 44.45 at a strike-rate of 145.18. Highly regarded by selectors as a long-term leader, Tilak serves as vice-captain to Shreyas Iyer in T20Is and previously captained India 'A' to the triangular 50-over title in Dambulla in June.
