At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Abhishek Sharma lit up the first of three T20Is against Afghanistan with a sensational display of ball-striking. Chasing a modest target of 157, the left-hander blasted 82 off just 32 deliveries, hitting seven fours and seven sixes against a high-quality attack featuring skipper Rashid Khan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and Noor Ahmad. Abhishek was eventually caught by Rashid Khan, securing the Player of the Match award for his explosive innings.
Abhishek's Punjab teammate, Arshdeep Singh, made a compelling case of his own by taking three wickets for 19 runs in his four overs. Arshdeep remains India's leading wicket-taker in the T20 format, with 140 scalps from 93 matches at an economy rate of 8.51 and a strike rate of a wicket every 14 deliveries. Meanwhile, 35-year-old wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy returned from a two-month injury layoff to deliver an economical spell of one for 16 in his four overs.
The match also featured Jasprit Bumrah, India's second-highest T20I wicket-taker, who boasts 508 international wickets across all three formats since his debut against Australia in Sydney in early 2016. Known for his unique action—featuring straight-braced arms, an unbowed left knee, and an advanced right-arm release point—Bumrah continues to be regarded as one of cricket's premier fast bowlers.
