The defeat adds to a dismal start for De Zerbi's team, who currently sit fourth-bottom in the Premier League after two draws and two losses in their opening four league fixtures. Tottenham's only win across all competitions this term was against second-tier Charlton in the earlier rounds of the League Cup.
Following consecutive 17th-place league finishes, Tottenham spent over £300 million ($404 million) on 10 new signings ahead of the season. However, De Zerbi's decision to make eight changes from last weekend's draw against Everton backfired against an under-strength Liverpool side.
Despite the set-backs, former Marseille manager De Zerbi expressed confidence in his squad's underlying quality and insisted Tottenham have been unlucky against Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham, and Liverpool. Taking responsibility for the poor run, De Zerbi vowed his side would work to find their rhythm ahead of Saturday's home fixture against Aston Villa.
