Former India pacer Zaheer Khan replaces Stephen Fleming as CSK head coach for IPL 2027 following three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as its head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Zaheer takes over from former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming, who guided the five-time champion franchise from 2009 to 2026 before being removed earlier this year following three poor seasons in which the team failed to make the playoffs.
Zaheer enters the role on a one-year contract ahead of the IPL mega auction scheduled prior to 2028. He brings previous IPL coaching experience, having served in the coaching set-up for both Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed the appointment, saying, "We are pleased to confirm Zaheer as the head coach. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our set-up. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of the franchise."
CSK Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan noted that Zaheer will be given the freedom to pick his own support staff. "Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains, and we look forward to having him in our family," Viswanathan said.
Reacting to his appointment, Zaheer stated, "It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the IPL. I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. I can’t wait to join the franchise with such a rich history."
