India Hold World No. 44 Panama to 1-1 Draw After Ryan Williams’ Opener

India produced a spirited performance at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, holding higher-ranked Panama to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly.
The Indian football team came close to pulling off a major upset before settling for a 1-1 draw against significantly higher-ranked Panama in an international friendly at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Friday.
Ranked 138th in the world, India took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute when Ryan Williams capitalized on a defensive lapse, running through with only the goalkeeper to beat and finishing coolly to excite the home crowd.
Panama, ranked 44th globally, equalized against the run of play in the 68th minute. Substitute Omar Valencia unleashed a fierce left-footed strike from well outside the box, leaving Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu stranded.
While Panama did not field their strongest team—with only Cesar Blackman and Tomas Rodriguez in the starting XI having featured at the World Cup earlier this year—India consistently created better chances. Edmund Lalrindika missed a potential match-winner from close range in the dying minutes, and Manvir Singh fluffed a backheel as Panama escaped with a draw.
