Newly appointed Tamil Nadu vice-captain C. Andre Siddarth views his new leadership role as a privilege and a key opportunity for self-improvement ahead of the new season.
At 20 years old, C. Andre Siddarth views his new leadership role as a privilege after being named R. Sai Kishore's deputy in the Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy squad. The right-handed run accumulator is also set to captain the Tamil Nadu U-23 side in a match against Rest of India U-23 starting Thursday.
Reflecting on his appointment, Siddarth acknowledged that the added responsibility is driving him to elevate his game. "Becoming the vice-captain for a State like Tamil Nadu at 20 is a privilege and honour. The pressure that comes with it is a blessing," he said, adding that the experience will be a great learning process for him. Siddarth also cited admiration for his Tamil Nadu teammate B. Indrajith and former Australian skipper Steve Smith.
With more responsibility comes increased scrutiny, but Siddarth remains focused on personal growth rather than outcomes. "Ups and downs are part and parcel of the sport, so being level-headed is important. I am not worried about the result: I am only worried about my improvement," Siddarth stated.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Siddarth praised the approach of new head coach V. Yo Mahesh, noting that training has become far more intense. "Yo Mahesh is pushing us out of our comfort zone. He is being hard: he wants us to do the right things, which I feel is much needed going into a new season. Ninety per cent of the practice sessions feel like a match… they are so intense," Siddarth said.
