Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey has directed Director General Cdr. R.K. Srivastava to submit a point-by-point explanation regarding the decision-making process behind the national team's controversial jersey colour change.
The internal rift within Hockey India has escalated following a firm stance by president Dilip Tirkey over the national team's recent uniform change to saffron. Dissatisfied with an earlier response from HI Director General Cdr. R.K. Srivastava—who claimed operational decisions were historically not brought before the Executive Board—Tirkey has instructed Srivastava to submit a detailed, point-by-point reply supported by documentary evidence.
In a fresh communication addressed to all Executive Board members, Tirkey emphasized accountability and governance standards within the federation, setting a deadline for Tuesday.
'Hockey India does not own Indian hockey. We are trustees and custodians of a national sporting legacy,' Tirkey wrote, adding that general explanations without documentary proof would not enable the Executive Board to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
Tirkey clarified that the issue extends beyond the design or colour of the jersey, focusing instead on whether proper authority, consultation, and institutional processes were followed. He specifically questioned whether the change's impact on athlete readiness, confidence, and mental focus was evaluated, pointing out that national team players were forced to answer media questions about the new kit immediately prior to the World Cup.
The HI president requested comprehensive documentation, including the specific approvals or delegations utilized, timelines, personnel involved, internal correspondence, player and staff feedback, testing details, and the manufacturing process.
Reiterating the division of powers, Tirkey stressed that Hockey India's bye-laws place governance and policy oversight in the hands of elected bodies. While acknowledging the Director General's administrative role, Tirkey affirmed that executive responsibilities cannot replace or override the authority of elected officials.
