India taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series after crushing the West Indies by eight wickets with 8.2 overs to spare at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Chasing a target of 296, India comfortably cruised past the visitors' total of 295 for seven.
Virat Kohli headlined the chase with an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls, smashed with 10 fours and nine sixes. During his innings, Kohli crossed 15,000 runs in ODI cricket—joining Sachin Tendulkar as the only other Indian batter to reach the milestone—hitting a swivel-pull off Alzarri Joseph for four to cross the landmark. He later brought up his 55th ODI century with a towering six over long-on off Gudakesh Motie.
Indian skipper Shubman Gill scored 110 off 108 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and a six. Gill, who was dropped earlier by substitute Keemo Paul off Jayden Seales, shared a dominant 151-run second-wicket partnership off 132 balls with Kohli. Earlier, Gill and Rohit Sharma put on a 74-run opening stand in 12 overs before Rohit was caught at deep midwicket off Joseph.
In the first innings, West Indies opener Justin Greaves scored 101 off 108 balls with 12 boundaries, helping build a 135-run opening stand. However, left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav turned the tide for India, picking up four wickets to restrict Shai Hope's side to 295 for seven.
