Afghanistan secured automatic qualification for the 2027 50-over World Cup with a victory over Ireland, forcing two-time champions West Indies into the qualifiers for a third consecutive edition.
Afghanistan has secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup following a victory over Ireland in Belfast on Monday. The win ensures Afghanistan will finish among the top eight teams in the ODI rankings by the September 30 cut-off date.
With this result, Afghanistan joins Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh in qualifying directly for the tournament. Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe are automatically included, leaving the top eight ranked teams outside of the host nations to take the remaining direct spots.
In contrast, two-time champions West Indies are currently ranked 10th and cannot gain enough ground to secure direct entry, despite having two ODIs left to play against India before the deadline. Consequently, the Caribbean side will have to play through the qualifiers for the third successive edition of the 50-overs tournament.
The West Indies previously failed to secure an automatic berth for the 2023 tournament and subsequently lost in the qualifiers, missing out on a men's 50-overs World Cup for the first time in their history. They had successfully advanced through the qualifiers to participate in the 2019 edition.
The 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, though the full tournament schedule is yet to be announced. Under a new format for the 2027 event, the winner of the qualifying tournament will move directly to the second stage, while the teams finishing second, third, and fourth will compete in a first-round stage called the Super Series.
