"If you give me the choice, I want to be first, I want to be hunted, and I want to be in control of our future, rather than depending on somebody else," Arteta said. Arsenal, who defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield last weekend, have boosted their squad with new signings Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa set to join.
The North London side is aiming for its first back-to-back titles since the 1930s, returning to action just 34 days after the conclusion of the World Cup. Emphasizing the challenge ahead, Arteta added: "We start from scratch, from zero, and we're going to have to prove we are at the level to go back to that position again… We need to breathe because it's going to be a long marathon."
Opponents Coventry City enter the top flight for the first time in 25 years after securing promotion from the Championship, recovering from a spell in the fourth tier in 2017-18 and past stadium ground-sharing issues. Sky Blues manager Frank Lampard remarked on the task ahead: "We will go through tougher times this year for sure because of the competition we're up against now. It's just a reality that we need to be ready for."
The opening weekend also features managerial debuts and transitions across the league. Last season's runners-up Manchester City begin life under Enzo Maresca against Bournemouth on Sunday after Pep Guardiola's departure following a decade-long spell that yielded 20 trophies.
