Arsenal launched their Premier League title defence in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over promoted Coventry City, inspired by new signing Christos Tzolis.

Defending Premier League champions Arsenal opened their season with a dominant 3-0 victory against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, August 21, 2026, spoiling the visitors' long-awaited return to the top flight.

Newcomer Christos Tzolis made an immediate impact in his first start for the Gunners. In the 15th minute, the Greek international winger stole possession and fed defender Riccardo Calafiori, who squared for Kai Havertz to finish. Eight minutes later, Tzolis sent in a left-sided cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only push into the path of Bukayo Saka, who scored into an empty net.

Captain Martin Odegaard added Arsenal's third goal shortly after halftime when his scuffed effort looped over Rushworth. "Amazing, he played a brilliant game," Odegaard said of Tzolis after the match. "He has been brilliant all preseason. He's so lively, it's hard to defend him. He's a really intelligent player, he always looks up and finds the right pass." Addressing his own goal, Odegaard added, "It was not the best finish but I was there."

Frank Lampard's Coventry side, who won the Championship last season to end a 25-year absence from the Premier League, struggled to create clear opportunities. Coventry's best attempt came in the 42nd minute via a speculative overhead kick from Loum Tchaouna that cleared the bar, while Jack Rudoni managed their only shot on target with a weak 86th-minute header saved by David Raya.

Prior to kickoff, Arsenal also introduced new signing Ezri Konsa to the crowd following the England defender's transfer from Aston Villa earlier in the day.
