Having won the opening Test, the Indian Cricket Team had a solid outing on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, finishing at 300 for five.
India lost KL Rahul early for 18, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made 45 before being bowled by Asitha Fernando. Reduced to 66 for two, Devdutt Padikkal and captain Shubman Gill steadied the innings with a 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Gill struck a half-century (50) before falling, while Padikkal went on to score 117, marking his second century of the series.
Rishabh Pant retired hurt on three, but Ravindra Jadeja provided crucial support with 43 runs as he and Padikkal pushed India beyond 250. Jadeja was dismissed on the stroke of stumps, leaving Dhruv Jurel and Saransh Jain undefeated at the crease at the end of the day.
