World number two Elena Rybakina was forced to retire from her Cincinnati Masters quarter-final against Iga Swiatek due to a left heel injury, just 10 days ahead of the U.S. Open.
World number two Elena Rybakina retired from her ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters quarter-final match against Iga Swiatek while trailing 4-1 in the opening set on Thursday (August 20, 2026). The Kazakh player suddenly halted play, unable to place any weight on her left heel. Following a brief intervention from her trainer, she stepped off the court after playing just one more point.
The injury arrives ten days before the start of the U.S. Open. Had two-time Grand Slam champion Rybakina reached the Cincinnati final, she would have secured the world number one ranking for the first time in her career. That opportunity arose following incumbent Aryna Sabalenka's round-of-16 exit, where the four-time major winner from Belarus was defeated by 35th-ranked Czech Sara Bejlek in an early Thursday morning finish.
Rybakina's departure sends Swiatek into the Cincinnati semi-finals to face third-seeded Jessica Pegula, who advanced by beating Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4).
Speaking on court after the match, Swiatek expressed sympathy for Rybakina: "Honestly, I was feeling anxious just looking at this situation," Swiatek said. "I hope that she will be fine. Obviously the net tournament is the priority. I know this one is important as well, but U.S. Open is U.S. Open and I hope she's going to be ready for that. She's also super-close to being number one in the world, so it's a shame."
