Fyers American Gambits registered back-to-back victories on the opening day of the fourth Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, including a win over PBG Alaskan Knights where Javokhir Sindarov defeated Viswanathan Anand.
Fyers American Gambits kicked off their campaign in the fourth edition of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League with a strong showing, registering two wins on the opening day in front of a full house.
In their opening fixture, the American Gambits defeated PBG Alaskan Knights 10-4. The highlight of the match was Javokhir Sindarov defeating Viswanathan Anand, while Maurizzi also secured a win against Abhimanyu Mishra. Nihal, Dubov, Bibisara, and Sarasadat played out draws in their respective games.
The franchise followed up with a convincing 15-4 victory against Triveni Continental Kings, the most successful team in GCL history as two-time champions and last year's runners-up. In that match, Nihal, Dubov, and Maurizzi registered wins for the Gambits, while Sarasadat suffered a loss to Kosteniuk.
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen made his return to the league with defending champions Alpine APL Pipers after missing the last edition in Mumbai. Carlsen was held to a draw by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of Cheq Mumba Masters, but Alpine APL Pipers still secured a 10-8 match victory.
It was a difficult opening day for Triveni Continental Kings, who also lost 9-10 to Ganges Grandmasters prior to their defeat against the American Gambits.
