Indian fencers captured 17 medals, including four golds, across individual events on the opening day of the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria.
India made a dominant start at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, capturing 17 medals on the opening day of the event. The national squad claimed four gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals in a competition that began on Sunday and will run through August 14.
According to a release from the Fencing Association of India, the squad ensured at least one Indian fencer reached the podium in all six individual events across the Sabre, Foil, and Epee disciplines.
In the men's Sabre competition, Nikhil Wagh led a four-way victory by winning gold, while Lakshay Badser took silver, and Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared the bronze medals. In men's Foil, Tejas Patil captured silver and Hemash Sanasam took bronze. In men's Epee, Lokesh Vemani earned silver, with Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess taking bronze.
India's women athletes secured top honours in two out of three categories. Joys Ashita won gold in women's Foil ahead of teammate Kanaglakshmi, who took silver. In women's Epee, Prachi Lohan clinched gold while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya both earned bronze. In women's Sabre, Jeferlin claimed gold, Aakhari took silver, and Shreya Gupta added a bronze.
Commending the contingent, Shri Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, said, "I extend my heartiest congratulations to all our medal winners, coaches, support staff, and families for their relentless dedication and contribution to India's remarkable performance."
