Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain has bolstered its backline by signing French left-back Lucas Digne from Aston Villa.
Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain has strengthened its defence by signing left back Lucas Digne from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.
PSG announced the signing on Sunday evening without disclosing financial details. However, sports daily L'Equipe reported that the club paid the Premier League side €10 million ($11.6 million) for the transfer.
The 33-year-old Digne, who was born in the Paris suburbs, previously represented PSG after joining from Lille in 2013. His career path later included stints at Roma and Barcelona, followed by eight years in the Premier League with Everton and Villa.
An energetic left-footed defender recognised for accurate passing, Digne became a regular for France under former coach Didier Deschamps. The 64-cap international played in the recent World Cup, where Les Bleus reached the semifinals.
“I am very honoured to be returning to Paris Saint-Germain following the wonderful experience I had here more than 10 years ago,” Digne said. “I am particularly impressed by how the club has developed over the years.”
The acquisition comes shortly after PSG signed France winger Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco. The club is scheduled to begin its Ligue 1 title defence at home against Rennes on August 23.
