Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, defeating Europa League winners Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg, Austria. PSG joined AC Milan and Real Madrid as the only teams in history to successfully retain the trophy.
The French champions took the lead in the 20th minute when Desire Doue set up Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Kvaratskhelia shimmied past defender Matty Cash before unleashing an unstoppable strike past Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Aston Villa equalized on the stroke of halftime through 17-year-old Brian Madjo, who was making his club debut. John McGinn floated a ball toward the six-yard box, and Madjo volleyed into the roof of the net under pressure from Willian Pacho. Madjo, signed from Metz in January and cleared to play after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Villa's appeal against a FIFA ruling, became the youngest-ever scorer in UEFA Super Cup history.
PSG sealed the victory in the 61st minute when second-half substitute Ousmane Dembele sent a through ball to Doue, who curled his shot into the far corner. Although initially flagged for offside, a VAR review confirmed the goal.
The fixture was officiated by Somalian referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who had been barred from officiating at the World Cup after being denied entry to the United States. Speaking after the match to TNT Sports, Doue said, "We are always hungry, we want more. After the Champions League final, I said we wanted more. We have ambitions, we're a young team, and we want to win everything again this season."
The victory earned PSG manager Luis Enrique his 13th trophy since joining the club in 2023. In contrast, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has now lost all four of his UEFA Super Cup appearances. PSG, who won the trophy last year against Tottenham Hotspur on penalties, will next defend the French Super Cup against Lens on Sunday, August 16.
