The Tamil Nadu Premier League kicks off its 10th season with defending champions iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans taking on home side Dindigul Dragons, as organisers reflect on a decade of challenges and look to grow the tournament's audience.
The Tamil Nadu Premier League, launched in 2016 as the TNCA's pet event, is set to turn 10 this season, having weathered franchise changes, the Covid-19 pandemic, and financial issues over the course of its decade-long run.
TNCA secretary U. Bhagwandas Rao expressed pride ahead of the season-opener. "It is great that we have been able to sustain this long. But we need to find creative ways to attract more audience," he said on Monday.
The tournament begins at the NPR College Ground with a re-match of last edition's final — defending champion iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans facing home side Dindigul Dragons. The R. Sai Kishore-led Tamizhans have retained the core of the squad that won them their maiden title, backed by a bowling attack with plenty of experience and variety.
Dindigul Dragons could face a tougher challenge this time round. Former skipper R. Ashwin is no longer part of the playing set-up, and Varun Chakaravarthy is currently unavailable for selection due to injury, leaving B. Indrajith's side needing to find a new formula for success.
Chepauk Super Gillies, the league's most decorated franchise with four trophies, will look to recapture past glories under the leadership of N. Jagadeesan. Two-time winners Kovai Kings, now competing as Vida Kovai Kings following an ownership change, will primarily target a playoff spot, having reached that stage in four of the last five seasons.
Trichy Grand Cholas, Salem Spartans, Nellai Royal Kings and Madurai Panthers will all return with renewed vigour after difficult campaigns in the previous edition.
This year's competition will be restricted to just two venues — the NPR College Ground and the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. Tuesday's opening match pits iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans against Dindigul Dragons.
