Hockey India has firmly rejected the Pakistan Hockey Federation's request to move its Asian Champions Trophy matches to a neutral venue.
Pakistan has requested the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to shift its matches in the upcoming Men's Asian Champions Trophy 2026 to a neutral venue, citing a 'sensitive bilateral situation' and security concerns. The tournament is scheduled to be hosted in Punjab's Mohali and Jalandhar from October 27 to November 5.
Hockey India secretary general and AHF Vice-President Bhola Nath Singh rejected the request, stating that no venue changes will be entertained. 'No such request would be entertained. There will be no change in venue. In the past also Pakistan did this, if they want to play in Asian Champions Trophy they will have to come to India,' Mr. Bhola Nath said. He added that Bangladesh and Oman could step in to replace Pakistan if they refuse to travel.
Interim Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani stated that the proposal was made to ensure a 'safe, dignified and conducive environment' for national players and officials. Mr. Wani affirmed that Pakistan remains committed to global hockey and keeping sport free from politics, hoping the AHF would positively consider the neutral venue proposal.
The request follows reports from a senior PHF official stating that the Pakistani government has not cleared the team to travel to India. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had officially announced the event dates alongside Bhola Nath, noting India's sports policy allows Pakistan to compete in multinational sporting events.
Pakistan previously pulled out of the FIH Junior World Cup in Tamil Nadu last year as well as the Asia Cup due to security concerns. The six-nation tournament features India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Japan, and Korea.
